My Dentist is James McDermott who’s located at Ayrfield Medical Centre. This is a modern building located on the Granges Road, Kilkenny City.
It is over a year since I had to get dental work done. All my experiences have been good and accessibility has never been a problem.
In my experience there are few Dental practices In Kilkenny that are easily accessible for wheelchair users.
Parking:
When you arrive at the car park, there are several disability parking spaces. Also the car park is protected by a ticket barrier which means only patients are permitted to use these facilities ensuring disability spaces are available most of the time, also giving you an extra sense of security around the place. However I have noticed on a busy clinic day we could be still left without a place to park in the car park due to demand on spaces.
Bathroom:
The bathroom is roomy and I found it easy to get around it in my chair. The handles and rails were all at the correct level.
Access to the dentist room:
When I entered the Medical Centre the lift located to the left of the corridor brought me up to the first floor where Mr. McDermott’s practice is. There was plenty of space for my motorised wheelchair, I had no difficulties in moving around. The waiting area is spacious enough for my chair to manoeuvre around, there is a T.V. there too.
Access within their room:
In the dental office there is plenty of room for me to manoeuvre my chair which is always a concern for me wherever I go. The dentist checks my teeth while I remain in my chair. Due to my limited mobility I find it difficult to get into the dental chair and so this is convenient for me as I do not have to get out of my chair and have the inconvenience of getting into the dental chair which is difficult for me and my limited mobility.
Summary:
The Ayrfield Medical Centre is very well equipped for people with all levels of abilities and disabilities.
